August was one of the busiest months of the year on the UTR Pro Tennis Tour (PTT). Universal Tennis helped host 22 events in 12 cities around the world.
Each PTT event has a financial commitment of $25,000, with players guaranteed prize money and multiple matches each week.
Let’s take a look at some of the stops.
Gorzny, Gailis Win in Boca
American teen Sebastian Gorzny kicked August off with a PTT title in Boca Raton. The 19-year-old is a sophomore at TCU and a hugely successful player already, having won the 2022 junior Wimbledon title (alongside Alex Michelsen).
Gorzny has played a number of PTT events all over the U.S., and won his first event, also in Boca, in June of 2022.
In the women's event, Ema Burgic Bucko (a former Baylor standout turned coach influencer and Universal Tennis ambassador) made her return to pro tennis. Ultimately, she had to withdraw with an illness. Rachel Gailis would go on to win the tournament.
Sell Captures Third PTT Title
My Tennis HQ founder Karue Sell added yet another PTT title to his 2023 collection. The 29-year-old former UCLA standout made his return to pro tennis earlier this year in Newport Beach, winning two titles.
During the week of August 7-13 in Newport, Sell won all six of his matches in straight sets. He’s now in Tunisia competing on the ITF Tour.
PTT Hosted at Campuses in Waco, Denver, and Knoxville
Baylor University hosted its first PTT event with a men’s $25K during the week of August 14-20. Oskar Brostrom Poulsen dropped one set on his way to the first-place prize money check of $3,600.
Poulsen has also played on the PTT in his home country of Denmark. The junior is about to play his first season for the Baylor Bears after transferring from Middle Tennessee State University.
Denver University also hosted its first PTT, marking the first time a joint-pro tennis event has been held in the city in 50 years. Denver junior Daniel Sancho Arbizu won the title, complete with a win over his teammate Nicolas Herrero Cuesta, who won the PTT in Barcelona the week prior.
In women’s action, Mexico’s Victoria Rodriguez snagged her seventh PTT title, and first of 2023. She didn’t drop a set or lose more than four games in any single set across the tournament.
Yet another college campus hosted PTT action this month with Tennessee bringing a men’s and women’s $25K to its grounds. The men’s field included the likes of former Top 40 ATP pro Donald Young.
But it was Tennessee grad student Angel Diaz who captured the title, taking out Young in the semifinals in three sets. Wisconsin sophomore Maria Sholokhova won the women’s crown.
PTT Returns to Australia
The PTT returned to Australia with four events (two men’s and two women’s) held in Carrara on the Gold Coast. The winners included Alicia Smith, Tom Fancutt, Jeremy Bael, and Kayla Mcphee.
